What made Mass Effect such a great game?

I picked up Mass Effect because i heard it was an amazing game, but i really haven't found it that exciting like i did Knight of the Old Republic. I don't play a lot of RPGs but it just feels like it's missing something and the fighting and medi-gel thing is kinda weird. Do i need to play it more (i've already given it a second chance). Or is it just a game that would appeal more to those who love RPGs?What made Mass Effect such a great game?
Definitely!

I was in the same boat -- pre-ordered the game thanks to my love for KOTOR then was really disappointed after playing for the first 5 hours. This summer, after two years of letting it sit on my shelf, I started playing again. After getting through the 10 hour mark or so, the game gets better. I don't think it gets quite to KOTOR levels of awesomeness, but it's a great game. What made Mass Effect such a great game?
if your into sci-fi, keep playing, what makes mass effect so awesome is the story, the mechanics can feel a bit clunky from time to time, but my god is the story fantastic, i've described it to friends as taking pieces from stargate and blending them with star wars, sprinkling some star trek on top then cooking it into a toasty shell of battlestar galactica and finally serving it with star fighter. Essentially it blends what i feel are the best elements of almost every piece of sci fi ever into an epic story of awesomeness.also, are you a spectre yet? do you have the ship? once you have the freedom to go wherever and do whatever the game picks up dramatically.
i like the storyline and how you get to control the conversation. ALso how when ever you examen something there is a signifference to it. like when you ask how the ship works
The story and the universe.
The story, the writing, the dialogue options, the characters, the missions, the universe. Many complaints on the game were the menu screen for switching weapons and armor and all that, and I agree with those complaints but it didn't get in the way of me enjoying the game.
yeah.. i didnt think it was anything special.. it was sorta a let down to me.
Alright well sounds like i just need to play it more, cuz i keep hearing the story is excellent, i'm a spectre and i finished the Zhu's Hope thing, the driving and the whole life recharger was really getting on my nerves, but i'll definitely play it again after i get bored of Gears 2 and find some frickin time! Thanks for the help!
absolutely loving it atm, but dont really like how it forces you to play through a lot of times to get all the achievements. the conversations are always dynamic and new, the universe is massive and once you get to the higher levels your character starts to get real powerful (biotics are great to use)
The story, characters, and I dug the gameplay. Liked it much more than KOTOR, as I'm not huge on Star Wars.
I didn't enjoy it, even though I really tried. Its not bad, but it didn't keep my attention.
Depends.....if you stll dont like it shortly after taking control of the Normandy then odds are its not your kind of game. I can tell you that there is nothing special about the very begining of the game before the Citadel at all. When I 1st played it, I honestly thought everyone had lost there mind calling it the best single player game available.....After the 1st few hours though it became fun. It actually ended up being my favorite game on a console this gen, I just had to make it past the begining. But its not everyones cup of tea. People like different games.
It all depends on what you're looking for in the game. If you liked KOTOR because of the story, interactive cutscenes, and ability to make moral choices that shape the events around you, then you'll like mass effect just as much. If you're just looking for a mindless action game, then you're probably not going to like mass effect.
BioWare nuff said.
I rented it on my non-live Xbox account before I got Xbox... I didn't like it really... :I
anything that boiware makes is gold. i mean mass effect didnt blow me away but it was a fun solid game that will keep you busy
i agree. It felt like a clunky TPS and the rpg elements were poor.

u rented it on your xbox before you got an xbox...what? and what does not having live have to do with mass effect?
I don't really know. I just liked it alot. =-) Story was good and the combat was pretty easy.
I liked how you could pick your own thing you wanted to say to people. The story line was great and I loved the shooting aspect.
